The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-I took the one less traveled by ,And that has made all the difference. 1) The figurative language used in this poem is Metaphoric. The fact that "the passing there had worn them really about the same" tells us that both roads were equally travelled. The forked road in the poem usually represents crucial decisions, free will and/or fate. The poet, Robert Frost, anticipates his future. This can be seen from "Somewhere ages and ages hence and/or I shall be telling this with a sigh.". The "Sigh" as mentioned in the passage symbolizes feelings of remorse. The poem tells the reader that there is NO main path for one to take, just the path that one has chosen and supposedly, the Other path. 2) Personally, I like this poem as it subconsciously gives everybody the ability to choose. However, the ability to choose comes with a responsibility. Choices are inevitable and once one have made that particular choice, there is no turning back, and one must live life to the fullest through that path.
